The admission process for MBA 2019 has already started and most of the aspirants preparing for MBA will be facing a few questions that create a lot of confusion. And one of these questions is, whether one should enrol for MBA or PGDM.
In this Blog, we will try to answer the same. So, let’s begin with the basic differentiation so you can understand both the MBA and PGDM perspective in depth.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
MBA is a Post-graduation degree of two years that is generally divided into 4 semesters of 6 months each. A College or department that is affiliated with a university and has grants from University Grant Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) can offer MBA degree as per the university syllabus.
Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
On the other hand, PGDM is a diploma program of 2 years. And it is a diploma that is not affiliated to any university, but provided as an autonomous program. PGDM is generally considered equivalent to an MBA degree. However, the institute offering PGDM require AICTE approval.Key Differences
The syllabus for MBA is structured by the state or central universities and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India (GOI). And change to the MBA curriculum is less frequent but initiated as and when required. However, PGDM institute holds the autonomy to revise the syllabus as per the latest industry demands.Fees:
Generally, the MBA degree is less costly as colleges get several grants from central & state government. But at times the fee for the PGDM program is more due to frequent curriculum upgrades. However, the fee is also dependent on various other factors such as the standard and reputation of the institute.
After MBA you can easily continue your study for programs like PhD as it’s a postgraduate degree. But after PGDM you can’t continue further studies as a diploma is not recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for PhD programs. Similarly, there are a few more benefits of an MBA degree over a PGDM. Let’s discuss those to a clearer picture.
(a) Study Outside India: In case you are planning to study further in or outside India, a degree accredited by a university is preferred by most universities worldwide over a diploma. And, when it comes to the MBA at Akemi, it is backed by Savitribai Phule Pune University that is among the top 10 Universities of India so the students have an added advantage.
(b) Industry Exposure: It’s considered that PGDM offers more industry exposure than an MBA degree. But the fact is that in case of the management degree also you have to complete compulsorily 4 to 6 months of Internship/Industrial training. So the exposure is the same in both programs.
(c) MBA is in Demand: During its 54th convocation on 16 March 2019, IIM-A (Ahmedabad) awarded the MBA degree for the first time in place of its flagship PGP (Post Graduate Program) management diploma. It’s a sign of the increasing demand for a management degree over the diploma. And, the Akemi MBA stands up-to-date with the latest requirements.
